Comment on Is the serial comma a serial crime? Or is the crime the lack thereof? by Martin Bentley Krebs

I prefer the use of the serial comma, as I feel it distributes the connection between the items being listed more equitably. I know that there are certain style manuals that say otherwise, as well as "house" styles that set their own parameters. The ultimate goal is clear communication – if the absence of the comma before the conjunction makes the sentence unclear, then it should be included for the sake of clarity. If a client insists on being grammatically incorrect, though, then I would defer to the one who's signing the checks.

From a publishing standpoint, the double space between sentences tends to create gaps of white space that sometimes flow distractingly through paragraphs, giving these spaces the name "rivers." In the days of hot metal type, paragraphs containing said rivers were re-composed through letterspacing to minimize or eliminate them. If the ultimate goal is to communicate printed material in the best manner possible, a single space will allow the reader (more specifically, the reader's eyes) to maintain a less interrupted path while taking in the information, thereby improving the quality of that communication.

The chest-beating insistence on being "right" by both sides of the issue is a moot point. Those who declare the use of two spaces is correct have no basis other than personal preference on which to base their assertions. Those who insist that the "rule" is now a single space most likely cannot articulate why the rule even exists. Now you have logical reasoning to help you refute and inform the opposing parties, so the matter should be settled, and energies can be focused on more relevant issues, such as why people continue to (incorrectly) substitute "I" for "me" because they think it makes them sound smarter, or why there is no keyboard command for an interrobang.

Bing is irrelevant in the long term to either offset Google or make an lasting impact on search in general...Google is the verb for search and you can never underestimate the power of the masses to go with the norm or the brand. The only true competitors on the horizon for search are Facebook and Twitter - as people learn to use their friends' recommendations more to find the information they require and the social services learn to leverage their information more; and better.

Comment on Why Trade Advertising is Important in the Digital Age by Peter Caputa

Great post, Drew.

Modern PR firms are leveraging the online version of trade publications to build links for their client. These publications can also drive a lot of targeted traffic at publication time, as well as ongoing, since the articles often rank well for search terms.

Further, many of these publications sell online advertisements and newsletter sponsorships and even dedicated email campaigns. If you build landing pages on your client's site that these ads can direct visitors to, you can start to fill the top of your client's sales funnel pretty quickly.

Whether to continue the print advertising with these pubs is a different conversation, though. Sometimes, these pubs force you to bundle it, of course. But, a savvy media buyer knows how to negotiate for the right package.

Glad you're enjoying the book. Marketing is moving so fast. Reading is a must to stay on top of the trends.
